From ancient times to the present day, traditional approaches to healing in China have placed value on music therapy. Used in combination with various other treatments such as acupuncture and herbal medicine, it treats the individual holistically, on an emotional and psychic as well as physiological and pathological levels.
Throughout ancient Chinese history, renowned healers used the correspondence of the five musical tones with the five internal organs, in combination with these elemental creation and control relations, as a basis for treatment of illness with music therapy. For instance, a disease associated with over activity of the liver (Wood Element) is treated using music which can control the activity of the Wood Element. Since Metal overcomes Wood, Metal music is applied, overcoming and neutralizing the liver's activity and restoring balance to the bodily functions. Conversely, an illness associated with weakening of the liver function is treated using Water music. As Water gives rise to Wood, it strengthens the body's Wood Element (the liver system).
